Provenance
Gifted to the Kunstkabinett in ca. 1820 by the naturalist and professor at Göttingen university, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840). Lost in Gotha in 1945, the box was sold at an auction of the Munich Kunsthaus Weinmüller in 1957, first became part of the Monheim Collection and in 1977 was donated to the city of Aachen, where it had been kept in the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum until then. After a long-term loan to Gotha had already taken place, the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum and the city of Aachen decided to return the box to the Foundation Schloss Friedenstein. The box returned to Gotha in the summer of 2015.
