Description
On the right, part of the lake, surrounded by high limestone cliffs in the background. On the left at its edge are two goats, a magnificent brown and white spotted bull and two cows, one of which is standing in the water. Further to the left, a shepherd is sitting on the raised edge of the bank, being handed a jug by a woman. At her side is a dog. An oak tree rises behind the group and a farmhouse with a projecting balcony becomes visible behind it. Dark clouds herald the approach of a thunderstorm. Inscribed lower left: F. Gauermann 1833

Brederlo painting collection (Friedrich Wilhelm Brederlo); loaned to the city of Riga by the von Sengbusch family in 1906 with the right to return it at any time; Dr Reinhold Alexander and Margarete von Sengbusch; loaned to the labour administration in Riga on 13.09.1944 together with 4 other paintings from the municipal collection, but never returned; whereabouts unknown
