Description
in red-brown clothing richly decorated with gold embroidery and a wide lace collar, with wide white lace cuffs on the sleeves. His wide, fawn-coloured slipper boots are decorated with similar lace. He is carrying a sword and resting his left hand on a staff, his right hand is held at his side. His head is turned slightly to the right, his gaze straight ahead, and he is covered in dark hair that falls down to his collar. A dark moustache and gag beard adorn the energetic face. On the right breast, beneath the pointed collar, an ornament resembling an order is visible, hanging on a golden chain and set with precious stones. The sitter is standing in front of a table with a flowered cover, on the left in the background a column shaft, on the right a drapery. Allegedly inscribed: Joachim Sandrart 1650 (The inscription could no longer be found. The copy of the 1906 catalogue of a copy in the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe contains a handwritten correction: ‘Bez, rechts in halber Höhe Sandrart 1639’)
