Signed on the left: „P. Battoni“, probably faked; Mary Magdalene sits in front of a cave, wearing a pale red robe that has slid off her upper body; her blonde hair cascades over her breast and shoulders; she folds her hands over a skull which lies on the stone on her left and gazes at a crucifix which rests on her knees; a view of the countryside on the right, knee-length portrait
Provenance
From the collection of duke Ernest II of Saxe Gotha-Altenburg (cf. 1826 inventory). In 1943 still present in the libary of Friedenstein Palace (catalog 1943, p. 396); whereabouts unknown.
