Description
Smaller copy after the Rubens original, formerly in the Berlin Picture Gallery (lost); Neptune sits on a boulder in front of a tall sail and looks to Amphitrite (also identified as Libya or Cybele) standing next to him, who reaches with her left hand into a seahshell filled with seafood, which a triton holds out to her, while a cupid winds a string of pearls around her wrist; in front of the sea god, a nereid swims with a crocodile; on shore, on the right a hippopotamus emerges from the reeds; on the left, two river gods sit, of which one pours water from a large seashell; in front of them, a lion and a tiger snarl at each other; on the far left, the front part of a rhinoceros emerges.
