A full-length portrait with the pretension of a state portrait. The sitter is shown in full figure, standing, her body slightly to the left, her head turned to the right, looking at the viewer. Her dark hair curled over her left shoulder, she wears a state robe richly decorated with embroidery, appliqués, lace and shag, and a cloak with a broad, light brim trimmed with ermine, hanging from her right shoulder and falling to the ground; holding her right hand in front of her belly, she holds - as a sign of the function of the Lord Lieutenant (chief governor) of Ireland, also called "Viceroy", which her husband Philip Dormer Stanhope, Lord Chesterfield (* 1695, † 1773) held from 8 January 1745 to mid-November 1746.
