Description
Oval medallion, mother of pearl carved in high relief, with bust-length portrait of the Saxon elector facing right; the elector wears an embellished breast plate with the cordon of the Polish Order of the White Eagle; he wears his hair in a ponytail with a bag at the back of the head and curled at the temples; the artist's signature is found at the lower edge of the medallion: "GRAEFENSTEIN. F - GOTHA"; the curved tortoiseshell frame is appliqued with gilt silver elements: shells and a crown at the top.
Provenance
Acquired on October 20th 1925 at the Edgar Bolz auction at Hugo Helbing, Frankfurt on the Main (auction catalogue no. 25), together with the following medallion, for the sum of 1000 marks.
