Description
Portrait of a woman of about fifty years, with dark blue eyes and a very finely modelled pale face; belt-length portrait facing left on a green background; she wears a white kerchief and a black fur coat with a high collar and a ruff; her hands are finely formed, the index fingers are adorned with rings; the right hand rests on a green and red pillow, the left holds a little book bound in red.
Provenance
From the collection of duke August of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (cf. 1826 inventory). Still in the museum in 1943 (1943 catalog, p. 273); Friedenstein Palace until the end of January 1946; current location: Pushkin Museum Moscow, object 101038, no. ЭЖ-858 (M. Holbein, "Portrait of an Old Woman," 53 x 37 cm).
