Description
signed bottom right: F.M. 1928; the painting builds up in rhythmic stain stratification in a strikingly walled manner of painting, but at the same time achieves a massive spatial effect in the gradation of its tones from the surface. The tints are all broken to gray, so a great unification is achieved. On the green wall to the left, in front of which a chair is standing, a skipper with a blue sweater and gray trousers, smoking a pipe, is leaning against a boatman's maid. In the background, the powerful hull of a steamer on dock completes over which wide ship's chute becomes visible. Something hesitant, which is based above all in the suggestively conveyed atmosphere with its oppressive moisture, the human bondage that rises into it as it were, makes the picture a convincing interpretation of the working reality experienced.
