Description
Tekkai stands as an old man leaning on his knotted stick; his skull and face are of grotesque shape and ugliness; his three-part beard falls on his chest, the hair at the back of his head held together by a ribbon on his back; in his right hand he carries a scroll, over his Chinese robe, which leaves his emaciated chest and belly uncovered, a leafy apron and collar; he looks upwards and blows his soul towards heaven.
Provenance
Acquired in 1908 by Herbert Ginsberg in Japan; 1908 to 1942 Ostasiatica Collection Herbert Ginsberg, Berlin; confiscated by the SD in Rotterdam in 1942.
