Description
Two altar wings, belonging to the so-called Gotha altarpiece (inventory no. SG 5): the genealogy of Christ, depicted as a winding vine, from which the individual persons grow like buds; one can find the ancestors from Adam to Solomon on the left and from Jesse to Mary on the right panel, with each person named on the leaves; additional title blocks on the central axis place Jesus's ancestors chronologically.
Provenance
Exhibited in 1935 in the Ducal Museum (Reformation Room); still in the museum in 1943 (1943 catalog, pp. 229, 230); location since 1946: Pushkin Museum Moscow.
