Description
Two childlike couples in period costume are grouped around a dancing master in a ballet costume. The latter holds a (broken) garland of flowers, which one of the couples picks up. The other couple grasps each other lightly with the fingers of their right hands, the girl turning on the spot. The dancing master wears a white turban trimmed with red ribbon rosettes, with a gold-rimmed white headband and a bush of red, black, white and white-purple ostrich feathers. The jacket black, white and gold striped, with red sash draped over the right shoulder. A white drapery runs from the right shoulder around the body to the right hip, where it is held by a purple ribbon. The breeches and shoes black with red rosettes, the stockings white. One boy in gold rimmed white hat with pale purple band, in short sleeved copper green jacket with gold buttons, white sleeve vest with gold buttons and gold trim, purple sash, light brown breeches, white shoes with purple rosettes. The other boy wears white peaked cap with red ribbon and like-purple plume on yellow rosette, gold edged light blue jacket with gold buttons, sleeve vest with gold buttons, white sash, pale purple breeches, white stockings and black shoes with yellow rosettes. The one girl in gold rimmed white bodice, shirt sleeves with light green ribbon bows, ruffled pale purple skirt, green and purple striped underskirt and purple rimmed shoes. High convex white base with ovale outline and golden raised rocaille border. On the base flute, shawm, violins, bagpipes, spade, flower basket, yarn wrap, rake and a pile of green leaves. [...] Swords mark with dot and star. Model by Acier, autumn 1768. Mold number C 15. [...] - The present example is reproduced in Berling: Das Meißner Porzellan, Leipzig 1900, fig. 198, there as "Der Tanzmeister". The Meissen manufactory lists the group under the name "Der Marktschreier und vier Kinder". A very similar group from the Sèvres manufactory, titled "Groupe de La Danse", 25 cm high, for bisque porcelain, was made in 1786.
