Description
Bust of a young woman holding and reading a letter in both hands. Her upper body is turned to the right, she wears a yellow bodice with blue ribbons and has dark brown hair. At the back of her head there is a light blue bow, at the forehead two, probably fabric dark blue flowers are fixed as decoration. On the back of the painting are the remains of an old label and the auction number of Hans W. Lange (71). The portrait has a counterpart entitled "The Turk", which was stolen from Celle in 1976. The painting is an imitation or copy of a work by Rotari that is now in the collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlung Dresden (Inv. No. Mo 2164).
Provenance
Until January 1943 probably in unknown collection in Dresden. In the auction at Hans. W. Lange submitted from 27 to 29 January 1943 as lot no. 71 (cipher "22. Dresden"). Acquired there by the director of the Bomann Museum.
