Description
The marble statue Wotan shows the god of death and war and the highest god of Germanic mythology. He is represented on his throne with his ravens Hugin and Munin. The base is decorated with wickerwork, incised drawings and runes and refers to Nordic-Germanic mythology. The spear that Wotan once held in his right hand is lost. The sculpture is signed "R. Maison" on the upper side of the base. Apart from the artist's signature and an earlier, not very professionally executed restoration on the wrist and head of the figure, there are no other provenance marks.
Provenance
The marble sculpture of the Germanic god Wotan came into the museum's collection on 1 January 1939 through Paul Oertmann's testamentary donation. Oertmann was Professor of Civil Law at the University of Göttingen and died on 22 May 1938. There is no indication as to when he owned the sculpture or how it came to be in his collection.
