Description
Segment of a Torah scroll holder, the rod and the first disk is missing; Hebrew inscriptions (abbreviations) translated as: "... and [his] wife Rebekah (d.), daughter of Benjamin Se'eb, 28 Tammuz 682. Her son Josef Spiro, 687 here [in] Zgierz (d.)"; mutatis mutandis: Josef Spiro has a year 5687 (1926/27) in memory of his parents [the father's name is on the first disc] and Rebecca, a Torah scroll, probably donated to the synagogue in Zgierz; the date of death of the mother is July 24, 1922; on the disc are carvings of the cave of Machpelah, the grave of Rabbi Meir Ba'al ha-Ness, the grave of Samuel, the grave of Simon the Righteous and by the Wailing Wall and inlaid in nacre
Provenance
The disc was in 1994 passed from Ilse Michel to the city of Tübingen as a donation. She had been handed over together with a cloth (Lost Art ID 437981) in 1963 the professor and founder of the Institutum Judaicum (Tübingen) Michel of Tübingen team. The path of the disk to Tübingen is not released. About the identification of the founder on the disc, the descendants could be found. You, the disc was passed on 24 November 2011.
