Young painter

The painting shows a young painter sitting in front of an easel. His gaze falls on the canvas there. The right arm rests on the back of a chair behind the painter. He holds a pipe in his hand. It is probably a self-portrait of the artist. An excerpt from the auction catalogue of the auction on 11 May 1909 at Hugo Helbing in Munich is glued to the wooden plate. According to this catalogue description, the painting had a black decorative frame in 1909, which was replaced by today's newer stucco frame in 1941 at the latest. The numbers of the auctions at Hans W. Lange in 1941 (118) and 1943 (66) are noted with chalk on the back of the frame. There are several very similar versions of these motifs in circulation, some of which are attributed to other artists such as Pieter Codde, cf.
