Heldburg Fortress in southwest Thuringia was initially occupied by American and, from July 1, 1945, by Soviet occupation troops. The looting and removal of objects by occupying troops and third parties was followed by the expropriation of the inventory and art collections. The sequest lists created for this purpose are documented. From 1950 onwards, the remaining inventory of the fortress was distributed among over 20 institutions in Thuringia.
