Description
The Virgin Mary, leaning back and with outstretched arms, floats on clouds towards heaven, which opens with a golden glow over her; beside her, there are two angels, half kneeling and with graceful gestures, adoring her; below, the group of apostles, who are animatedly agitated, is divided by a sarcophagus placed diagonally across the picture; in the foreground right, one of them kneels with outstretched arms, looking heavenward; on the left, another one stands upright with a large book propped on his knee; the composition, which is designed on a grand scale and artfully executed as well as the rich colours bespeak the hand of a master; there are several repititions of the upper figural group but a larger version of this sketch is unknown.
