Description
The so-called "Altenburger Friedrichshumpen" (Altenburg tankard of the Fredericks) is engraved with scenes and inscriptions; the main picture shows a scene in which margrave Frederick is threatened by his enemies during a meal and saved by his servant who lets his hand be chopped off; on the upper rim of the beaker, there is a frieze with bust portraits of seven princes named Frederick who had ruled over Altenburg since the Middle Ages up to the time of the production of the beaker; the names of the 18 regents, together with the respective dates of their reign are engraved on the lid, framed by oval medallions; the lid brim is embellished with a map around its circumference, with the city of Altenburg drawn in; maker's mark.
