Description
The cylindrical beaker stands on three ball feet and is set with four rows of 10 silver coins each - alternating thalers and half thalers - along the body and lid; duke Frederick I of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg had these coins minted on the occasion of the opening of Friedrichswerth palace, which had been built by him, on July 19th 1689; their obverse show the portrait of the duke; the reverse of the half thalers shows the front of the palace, the reverse of the thalers shows a perspective view of the palace with its surrounding landscape; the coins are mounted "à jour" and only gilded on the inside of the beaker, on the outside they contrast with the the gilded surface; the lid is fitted with a spherical knob; marked with the Gotha hallmark and "AW".
