Description
Brightly coloured impression of the festive atmosphere in a Dutch city. The houses are flagged, the people promenade in Sunday dresses, the sunlight flickers through the masses of leaves of the trees. This extraordinarily fresh sketch was acquired by the art historian Eduard Fuchs in 1906. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands celebrated her 18th birthday on 31 August 1898, a week later she officially ascended to the throne. It is characteristic of Liebermann that he chose the civil, Sunday aspect of these festivities as his motif. (Description Matthias Eberle: Liebermann catalogue of works 1898/17); Signature: M. Liebermann (below right); street in a small Dutch town; old Italian gold frame.
