Description
Four compartments; unusual format. The front and back have a black lacquer background and are inlaid with green and reddish shimmering mother-of-pearl plates. The front depicts 19 horses in various movements. On the back is a Chinese inscription. The upper and lower plate are completely covered with mother-of-pearl and gold plates. The upper plate shows dragons in waves in the middle of ornamental stripes. The lower plate shows a Chinese stamped inscription amidst floral tendrils. The same technique is used on the lateral edges, through which the cord runs.

acquired by Ginsberg in 1910 from the Vautier Collection, Düsseldorf; 1910 -1942 Ostasiatica Collection Herbert Ginsberg, Berlin; in 1942 large parts of the Ginsberg Collection in Rotterdam were confiscated by the Sicherheitsdienst (SD); whereabouts unknown
