A Pair of Faience roof Riders: Sea Females Laying Over Waves
Collection Eduard Fuchs, probably acquired after 1924 and in his possession until 1933; 25.10.1933 confiscation by the Gestapo; forced sale (payment of Reichsfluchtsteuer) 1937 by his daughter Gertraud Fuchs: auction Auktionshaus Rudolph Lepke Berlin, catalogue 2115, p. 11 - on 15.10 and on 16.10.1937 this ridge turner was auctioned under no. 101: "EIN PAAR FAYENCE-DACHREITER: Über Wellen liegende Meerweibchen; gelb, braun, grün glasiert. H. 44,5 cm. Ming".
According to the annotated Lepke catalogue (Kunsthistorische Bibliothek Den Haag) auctioned by the Stuttgart art dealer Gottlieb Eger (Alt-China-Kunst: Friedrich Straße 38, Stuttgart-Nord) for RM 250 (estimated price: RM 300). The copy of the minutes of the auction 2115 at the Reichskammer für bildende Künste notes in typewritten form "Eger" and confirms the price of 250,- RM (Landesarchiv Berlin, A Rep. 243-04 Reichskammer für bildende Künste - Landesleitung.
Probably before 1945, Gottlieb Eger sold the two ridge turrets to an old private collection in Stuttgart. The "Meerweibchen" were submitted to the Stuttgart auction house Nagel for the auction of 6.12.2018 as lot 420 (estimated price € 3.000 - 5.000), but were initially withdrawn due to the suspicion of looted art.
