Description
Signed and dated on the right of the house: „L 1574 | V V“; on the left, under a tall oak tree, of which every single leaf is painted in detail, a bagpiper stands with two children; six peasant couples are dancing; next to the tree an old couple sits with a beer mug, another couple sits next to a covered wagon; in the foreground, a large kettle stands over the fire, in which an old man stirs, while a woman throws salt into the kettle; behind the dancers on the right, one can see the tavern "The Swan", in front of which more peasants are drinking; a few monks approach from the left; a bridge crosses the creek, behind which there is a village with a church; one can see a fight on the village green, stalls on the left next to the church and banqueters, carousers and dancers in front of another tavern; everything is unpleasant and crude, but very lively, with the background executed very finely in cool tones.
